Your dental team uses fillings to repair damaged teeth. Teeth might be damaged from decay, trauma, or attrition. At FP Dental, we restore your smile so you can carry on your day-to-day business without discomfort.

Why do I need a filling?

If a tooth has a cavity, it must be filled to prevent further decay. Cavities are caused by food that gets trapped between the teeth and creates a plaque trap. Plaque is a build-up of bacteria and sugar that forms acids on the surface of teeth. Cavities are caused when these acids erode enamel or the outer layer of the tooth.

What types of fillings are there?

• Silver or amalgam fillings are used on posterior teeth. Some of the metals used to make amalgam are mercury, silver, tin, and copper. These filings are frequently used for their strength and stability.
• Composite resins and glass are used to create white fillings, which are tooth-coloured. They are available in multiple shades to match the natural colour of your teeth. Composite fillings are available as part of a private treatment plan. They are also available to use on the front teeth under the NHS.
• Fillings made of powdered glass, called Glass Ionomer Fillings, are another tooth-coloured option. These fillings help prevent decay by establishing a chemical relationship between the tooth and the filling material and releasing fluoride.

Should I replace all my existing fillings with white ones?

If you feel self-conscious when you smile due to dark fillings, replacing them may be an option. This will be dependent on the remaining tooth structure. Many patients choose to swap their amalgam fillings for composite fillings as part of a private treatment plan, and we are happy to discuss the process with you.
